Nearly two months after the disappearance of the Argentine submarine ARA San Juan and its 44 crew members, the US Office of Naval Intelligence released a report in which it establishes the circumstances of the disaster. On November 15, the ONI detected an acoustic signal in the Atlantic Ocean that it attributed to the implosion of the submersible.

“They did not suffer”

The 400-meter-long incident, whose origin remains unexplained, produced energy equivalent to that of the 6-tonne explosion of TNT. At this depth, the colossal pressure exerted on the hull (400 kg / cm2) literally pulverized the submarine that the Argentine Navy had bought from Germany in 1985. “The San Juan disappeared in 40 milliseconds”, says the intelligence naval, stating that the crew probably did not realize anything. “They did not suffer, they did not die drowned, their death was instantaneous”.

Controversy over building maintenance

Although the cause of the implosion remains unexplained, the report of the ONI could revive the anger of the families of the crew and revive the controversy that occurred after the disaster on the maintenance of the Argentine Navy whose condition, sometimes close of the dilapidated, would be due to the reduction of the military budget, even, say some, to the corruption which gangrene the country.
